Johnny Guitar (1954)

Nicholas Ray’s cult western tells the story of Johnny ‘Guitar’ Logan and his reacquainting with a former love, the tempestuous and ambitious bar owner Vienna. A fairly standard tale of conflict over land rights and the like ensues, with the state of Johnny and Vienna’s relationship mirroring the events of the conflict. The film looks stunning, if not a little too intimate for the subject matter, and there is a surprising amount of philosophy involved, with the speech on migrants proving incredibly relevant yet I found the film to be ever so slightly lacking in several areas. Personally I have never been a fan of Joan Crawford, and despite the title Crawford is very much the focus of the picture. Its not terrible by any means, but a little dull and a bit too long.
